There are plenty of motorized skateboards on amazon, so I understand how hard it can be to pick the right one.

My aim is to make it simple for you to choose an eboard that they will love, while at the same time making sure you’re not stressing about their safety.

The Maxfind Max One is one of the best electric skateboards for kids. The top speed is fast enough for youngsters to get some enjoyment out of, but it doesn’t reach speeds where kids would seriously injure themselves if they were to have a fall. As far as electric skateboards for teenagers go, the Meepo Shuffle V4 is one of the more powerful options.

For youngsters who already have a bit of board sport experience, they will be able to take full advantage of this eBoard’s capabilities.

This is the ultimate beginner electric skateboard because it is stable and has manageable speed and acceleration.

If your teenager has little-to-no experience in board sports, this is where I would recommend you start.

Exway Flex electric skateboard

Price

RRP

Speed

I often get strange looks when I recommend the Exway Flex as a good beginner eboard for teenagers because technically, its capabilities fall toward the higher end of intermediate riders.

But the reason I think it’s the best electric skateboard for teenagers is that it has built-in safety controls that you can customize with its accompanying mobile app.

On other eboards, the limit is set by the speed mode that your child can select on the remote, however with the Exway Flex, you can set the upper speed and acceleration limit on the app and that will be the maximum speed your child can reach on the remote.

And as your child gains more confidence, you can increase the speed when you think they’re ready.

You can rest easy knowing that they won’t either accidentally or intentionally be speeding out of control.

Pros
  • Modular design – changeable wheels and motor system
  • Customizability via Mobile app
  • High carveability
  • Great range and speed
  • Amazing value-for-money
Cons
  • Pricey for this list
  • Battery: 18650 216Wh
  • Motors: 2x hub motors
  • ESC: Custom Hobbywing

This is a really fun electric skateboard that is portable and sits in the goldilocks sweet spot of power.

How To Choose An Electric Skateboard For Kids and Teenagers

Them

The first place you’ll want to start is your child and figure out what kind of rider they are. Think about their experience level, confidence and the type of riding they will be doing.

Will they just be riding it around the local streets near your house or are they going to want to ride it longer distances, to school for example?

For the eboards on this list, a lot of them have a very limiting max load. You don’t want to get a board that can only handle 60kg if your child is 70kg because the performance will be significantly decreased to a point where it’s just not enjoyable to ride.

There are a lot of variables, so taking the time to really think about what they need will make choosing their eboard a lot easier.

Price

The prices of electric skateboards that are suitable for kids and teenagers, thankfully aren’t that expensive.

We know that kids have a habit of getting really interested in something only to lose that interest a few months down the track.

If you’re buying your child their first electric skateboard and they’ve never really been into board sports before, I wouldn’t spend more than $500. If they have shown interest in board sports in the past, You’re probably more confident they’ll enjoy it, but I still wouldn’t spend any more than $800 at this stage. Anything more expensive than this will have power that just won’t be utilised.

As a side note, I made sure to only include electric skateboards on this list that already have good reputations and build quality eboards. So, if it does turn out that your child doesn’t like eskating, it will be easy to sell them on secondhand marketplaces.

Performance Specs of an Electric Skateboard

Usually, the performance specs play a huge role when choosing an eboard, however, when you’re choosing something for your child, safety and reliability is probably at the forefront of your mind.

Safety

Like with all board sports, there is an inherent risk of injury that sits as the responsibility of the rider. If you ride too fast, you’re more likely to have an accident that can lead to hurting yourself.

On electric skateboards, that risk can be multiplied just by their pure performance capabilities.

So I will say that you should encourage your child to always wear a helmet when riding.

I have crashed and had fallen, in what seemed like safe circumstances, where a helmet literally saved my life.

These are dangerous machines if not handled with respect.

That being said, my aim for this list was to provide options that are not only fun but more importantly, safe.

Speed

As an adult, my natural cruising speed sits around 30-35km/h. That’s the fastest I am comfortable riding at.

But everyone is different and has their own level of confidence.

For kids, the maximum speed I think is enough would be around 30km/h. And for teenagers, 45km/h is really starting to push the upper limits.

Range

Most of the time people want the longest range possible.

However, I think it’s important to choose a range that fits your needs.

An eboard with a longer range requires a bigger battery which makes the board more expensive.

So if you only need to ride 10 miles at most, then get something that can do 15 miles just to be safe and save yourself those extra dollars.

Hill Climbing

Depending on where you live and the type of terrain you have around you will determine if this is an important factor for you.

If you live in a pretty flat area, then you probably don’t have to worry about this as much. But for those with hills around their neighbourhood, you’re going to want to consider this.

Most eboards for kids have a hill-climbing ability of 15% (with a rider weighing <60kg). And the eboards in the Teenagers section have hill-climbing capabilities of up to 30% (rider <70kg).

15% is quite steep. That’s the steepest hill in my area and it is where I do all my testing for the eboards that I review.

Most hills are going to be less steep than this, but it’s important for you to double-check your area before you buy something and then find yourself not being able to get up those hills.

Should You Get An Electric Skateboard For Your Child?

Advantages of Electric Skateboards

  • Gets them outdoors. This has to be a favourite of parents who struggle to get their kids to go outside. Regular skateboards, scooters and bikes are great at doing this, but for some kids, that all sounds like effort. Electric skateboards are different because they sit in this middle section between physical activity and a tech gadget.
  • Gives them independence. Do you remember when you got your first bike and you could ride anywhere you wanted? That feeling of independence was such an exhilarating feeling. Imagine the happiness your child will feel when they get that.
  • The envy of all their friends. I can’t lie, electric skateboards are still a bit of a gimmick because not everyone has ridden one, let alone seen one. Others get excited about electric skateboards and often blurt out the words, “oh I want one!” when they see them.
  • Cheap hobby. The costs of riding electric skateboards are all upfront. But once you buy it, there’s no more financial investment you need to make into them. Not until they grow up and want to get a better eboard.

Disadvantages of Electric Skateboards

  • Can be dangerous. If the power of an electric skateboard isn’t handled correctly, you can quickly find yourself in trouble. But with some guidance and teaching, kids can learn how to have fun on eboards while still staying safe.
  • They’ll be late for dinner. Once your child is hooked on riding electric skateboards, they’ll want to do it every night after school. So good luck calling them back in for dinner, or to do their homework.

Final Thoughts

I think every kid should get the opportunity to at least try out electric skateboarding.

It’s great for kids mental health to be outdoors, active and have a little bit of independence.

The moment they step on the eboard, they’ll have a smile from ear-to-ear which will be nearly impossible to wipe off.

I hope this list of the best electric skateboards for kids and teenagers was helpful to you.

Ride safe out there eSkaters.
