Mini Electric skateboards are a great way to inject some zest into your life.

Yeah, electric longboards are fun, but have you ever arrived at a corner where you had to get off the deck to nudge the board around with your foot?

Most mini electric skateboards are designed with a kicktail and if you’ve ever skated in the past, you’ll know how awesome they are when riding. They make turning and riding off curbs a piece of cake a ton of fun.

Electric penny boards are a must have. Even if you have an electric longboard, mini eboards come in handy more often than you’d think.

How To Choose A Mini Electric Skateboard

You

The first thing you need to consider is yourself. Most importantly, your weight, riding style and experience.

A lot of these mini electric skateboards will have lower max load limits than electric longboards. The max loads are still quite high, so the vast majority of people won’t have to worry about this, but if you are on the heavier side, you’ll still be able to ride them, but the the performance of the board will be affected.

Think about the type of riding you want to do. If you want to do really long trips like to work/school you might want to consider moving away from the short electric skateboard models and opt for an electric longboard that is going to offer more comfort on longer trips.

Price

Thankfully, most of the mini electric skateboards on this list are very affordable.

The majority range between $350 and $1,500.

Keep your eye out for deals as they are often on sale throughout the year. I’ll also have discount codes for most brands that will get you an extra discount.

Performance Specs of a Mini Electric Skateboard

Safety

Part of my criteria for including an eboard in this list of the best mini electric skateboards is that it must be safe.

There is no point in buying an affordable ebaord and especially a really powerful eboard if it is not safe.

Electric skateboards are inherently dangerous as they can reach speeds that could cause injury if you fall off. So, please always wear protective gear when riding these electric skateboards.

Speed

A comfortable cruising speed for me is around 25kph and I ride them fairly often but wouldn’t consider myself a great rider.

These eboards can get up to 48kph which is insanely fast on a short deck.

Some riders will love this adrenaline inducing speed, but for most riders it’s unnecessary and under-utilised. A top speed of 40kph will be plenty for the majority of eskaters.

Range

It’s always best to get the largest range possible because it’s better to have it when you need it than be left stranded while out on a ride.

That being said, you can save yourself a good amount of cash by buying something that has less range but enough for you.

Think about the farthest place you might want to ride to. Look it up on Google Maps to see how far it is. That will give you a good indication of the type of range you should get.

Motor Type

The two main motor types are hub motors and belt-drive motors. I wrote an in-depth article explaining and comparing the differences between hub and belt-drive motors which is worth reading.

But for now, the most important things you need to understand is that hub motors are quiet and easy to maintain, while belt-drives are louder and require a bit of maintenance but are far more powerful.

This mostly comes down to personal preference. I generally ride hub motor eboards unless I have a lot of hills to climb.

Electric Skateboard Vs Mini Electric Skateboard and Penny Board

In the traditional skate industry, their are three types of decks. Longboard, Skateboard and Shortboard/Penny board.

In the eSkate industry it’s a little different.

Because eboards require motors and batteries and other electronics to run, they all take up space underneath the deck.

For this reason, it’s really hard to fit all of this onto a traditional penny board.

So, the eskate industry technically only has longboards and skateboards. But the skateboards are referred to and marketed as mini electric skateboards and are rarely referred to as penny boards.

Final Thoughts

Mini electric skateboards are some of the most fun eBoards you can ride.

Because of their design, short wheelbase and kick tail, you can really get an agile ride feel.

You’re able to turn around sharper corners, launch off curbs and just all-round have a good time.

Aside from them just being fun, they are ideal for people who are using public transport a lot. They’re great for eskating from your home to the station, jumping on the train, then eSkating again to the office.

Because they’re so small and lightweight, you can easily carry them on the train and walk around the station with it.

Plus they’re much easier to keep out of the way at the office than a longboard.

I think everyone should have a mini electric skateboard at their disposal even if you have an electric longboard.
